Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay is a Californian born in Long Beach, California on 24 August 1972. DuVernay learned to love art from the aunt Denise. Aunt Denise, who worked night shifts as a nurse, allowed her to study literature for art as well as theater during daylight hours. She showed DuVernay the 1961 movie West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay saw how art was an effective tool for promoting the cause of activism. DuVernay was educated by her mother who had a social conscience and pushed DuVernay to exhibit her artistic talents. DuVernay was a child with her family in Compton and spent her summers at Lowndes County Alabama in the residence of her father's parents. Her father recalled watching the Civil Rights Movement's historic march across the Edmund Pettus Bridge near the town of Selma Alabama. DuVernay was inspired by her summers in Alabama to inspire her film Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay finished Saint Joseph High School at Lakewood, California in 1990. In the year 1990, she was a graduate of Saint Joseph High school in Lakewood California. DuVernay began producing for the broadcast industry while she was in her the college. She was an intern with CBS News at the time of the O.J. Simpson trial. DuVernay recalled being asked to look over the rubbish in the house of one of jury. In the course of her duties, she became dissatisfied with journalism and moved into the publicity business. DuVernay was hired right from college to be an intern at a small studio. She started The DuVernay Agency, her company for public relations in 1999. Apart from PR, the agency launched a number of lifestyle and promotional networks including Urban Beauty Collective, the Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective, Urban Eye and HelloBeautiful.
